ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bruce Onobrakpeya, an experimental artist has over the years developed new forms and techniques for expressing ideas.  Iblebe (Alphabet and Ideograms) is one of the many innovations which, although started as doodles, drew inspiration from other sign writings including those from Nigeria and Ghana.  Ibiebe glyphs aim at encapsulating universal concepts of timeless values.  The forms, which are abstract, lend themselves to calligraphic, painterly and sculptural presentations.

Born in 1932, Mr. Bruce Onobrakpeya trained at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science & Technology, Zaria.  He taught in various secondary schools including St. Gregory’s College, Lagos.  He was also artist-in-residence at several institutions in the USA, Zimbabwe and in Nigeria.  He initiated the Harmattan Workshop series, an artists’ forum which has been running since 1998.
